All About Assistance.
Assistance the Series with Amy Albert
Hi there,
I'm Amy, the writer and creator of "Assistance". Assistance is about a woman named Alice who moves to LA to pursue her acting career.
In order to survive she takes a part time job with "The Actress", a not-as-famous-as-she-thinks-she-is actor. Alice gets a crash course in
the in's an out's of living in LA, and gets pushed to her personal limit as she manuveurs through life with an ego-maniac who's really just
insanely insecure. At the end we start to see the cracks in the The Actress's facade, and that Alice has the capabilites of being just like that.
So, yeah, it's a "good vs evil" story, but it's also a "we're all pretty much the same when you think about it" story.
Lots o' folks have asked me about how Assistance came about, so I thought I'd do a little Q and A section here. And for added fun I'll be
asking myself questions about the series, so it'll be like a crazy person muttering to themselves on a bus that would make you nervous,
but you're safe in your home/office/bathroom/phone booth(are those still a thing?) watching on a screen, silly! Don't be skerred!
Also, thank you so much for taking the time to check out the series. It was a real blast to make with my director Sean Boring and DP
Adam Levy.
Thank you so much for watching Assistance! And now, onto the interview with myself!
Love,
Amy
Q-Hi Amy, thanks for joining me today.
A-Well thank you, Amy, for having me. The place looks great, btw.
A-Thanks, I got a groupon for a maid service.
A. Sweet.
Q. How did you come up with the concept of Assistance?
A. Good first Q! Well, about a year ago my husband and I moved to LA from New York. We had pretty steady work in New York for a long time, but being new in LA we had to take a few day jobs. One of them for me was being as assistant to an actress.
Q. Did you like your job as an assistant.
A. Sure, at first. Then no. Not at all.
Q. So are you saying that some of the scenes from Assistance are from your experiences?
A. They are loosely based on some of the stuff I went through, yeah. I mean, very heightened(that's an improv term!) and made way sillier and bigger, but there are some truths there.
Q. How was it working with Jessica Carter as Alice?
A. She's a real nightmare to work with. I mean, yeah, sure, she was on time to every call, and knew her lines to a T, and was pleasant, not a diva, made everyone feel comfortalbe, and did a great job in the part, but I mean, come on! How much water can one actress drink?! Right?
Q. Uh, I don't know. She sounds like she did a really good job.
A. HA! Yes, she did! That was me doing jokes! Jessica is really lovely and it as a pleasure getting to work with her.
Q. How did you meet Sean Boring, the director of the series.
A. Oh man, you're gonna love this story! Get ready! Sean and I met when I auditioned for him at Funny or Die to be in his sketch, Breaking
Badge. I booked the part of Wanda White, who was based on Walter White. It was a really funny parody about Girl Scout cookies. We shot it
and it was fun!
Q. And then what?
A. What do you mean?
Q. You said I would love the story, so I was expecting something funny or weird.
A. Oh! Okay, well, the sketch turned out great and he was really fun to work with! Then he asked me
to be in his huge hit at FoD, Disney Couples Therapy, which was a three part series that has
had over 3 million views. And that's also where I met DP, Adam.
Life is a flat circle!
Q. I...nevermind. Is this the first series you've written?
A. Nope, I also wrote and was in one called The Secret Life of Otters which
starred my husband, Nick. It was about two comedians moving to LA and
having a hard time not acting like complete assholes and making fools of
themselves constantly. We're like two Larry Davids, except poor as
shit and with a majority of our hair still intact.
Q. Sounds good! Where can one view that series.
A. Here! http://thesecretlifeofotters.tumblr.com/
Q. Anything else you want to add?
A. Nope! Just thank you for watching, and good for you for actually reading this far!
